For my latest project (a curio cabinet), I made a trip down to Home Depot to grab some lumber. When I came out of the store, I was between a Ford Raptor SVT and a Ford Ranger. The guys in the Ranger were busy tying down their load. I popped my trunk, laid my seats flat, fit the 8' long boards into my car, slapped the trunk shut, and was on my way. It never really occurred to me how useful my car is, and maybe I should stop looking at trucks for the time being.

That said, if I could get my hands on a brand new 4-door diesel Ranger...

(In case anyone is curious, I drive a 2001 4-door Civic. Have a picture of it next to some large, old, dusty trees.

Nice! (Also, why are taillights on?)

Hah! I'd never noticed that! I'm in the habit of always turning my lights on - day or night. People around here seem to think that daytime running lights make them visible, but they forget that it doesn't make them any more visible from the rear. In driver training we were instructed to always turn your lights on.

Nah, just get a Silverado or Sierra with an 8' box. You know you want one!

No - too long. We currently live in a basement suite that requires us to park in the back via the back alley. Getting in and out is tough enough as it is.

To be fair, a Ranger isn't actually very good at truck things.

I suspect the same for the Raptor.

As long as you can work with the odd shaped bed, it probably isn't so bad. I mean it is an F-150 after all. Although, yes I would rather have a regular F-150 for truck things. The Raptor would be for fast truck things.

This is something I've been thinking about recently - if the frame of a truck was designed differently, and pushed further toward the sides of a vehicle, could a person make a lower bed? Almost every time I see a truck from the side, it seems like the bed height is quite high, and that there's a reasonable amount of wasted space underneath the bed, sort of between the driveshaft and frame rails. If the frame rails were pushed further toward the sides of the vehicle, would it be possible to stuff some hybrid battery packs in between them and the driveshaft? You'd have to admit - all the low-end torque provided by an extra electric motor could be pretty cool. If it was a plug-in hybrid, it could also give a huge mileage boost for short range driving.

I'm sure something along those lines could be possible. The only issue I see is protecting the batteries- both from environment and from the stress of the location.
